Skin Cancer Treatment: Why Early Detection Saves Lives

Skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States—but when found early, it is also one of the most treatable. Regular skin exams and timely evaluation of new or changing spots can make a life-saving difference.

At Metro Dermatology, with offices in Elmhurst, Bronx, Queens, and Long Island, NY, and Fort Lee, NJ, our board-certified clinicians provide comprehensive skin cancer screenings, accurate diagnoses, and advanced treatment options to help patients achieve the best outcomes possible.

The Importance of Early Detection

Skin cancer develops when abnormal changes occur in the DNA of skin cells, causing them to form growths or lesions that may invade nearby tissue if left untreated. Detecting these changes early allows for highly effective, minimally invasive treatment and dramatically improves long-term outcomes.

According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, early detection saves lives—the five-year survival rate for localized melanoma is over 99% when treated promptly. Because 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70, routine skin checks are an essential part of preventive healthcare.

When to See a Clinician

Seek prompt evaluation if you notice:

  • A new or changing mole, freckle, or spot

  • A sore that doesn’t heal or keeps bleeding

  • Rough, scaly patches or lesions that itch or become tender

  • Changes in color, shape, or size of existing spots

Common Types of Skin Cancer

The three most common forms of skin cancer include:

Basal Cell Carcinoma (BCC)

The most common type, often appearing as a pearly bump, pink patch, or non-healing sore. BCC is typically slow-growing and highly curable when treated early.

Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC)

Usually presents as a scaly, firm bump or crusted lesion that may bleed or enlarge. SCC is readily treatable with early diagnosis and care.

Melanoma

A less common but more serious form that can spread rapidly if ignored. Watch for the ABCDEs of melanoma—Asymmetry, Border irregularity, Color variation, Diameter over 6 mm, and Evolving appearance.

Routine dermatologic skin exams are key to identifying these cancers at their earliest, most curable stages.

Skin Cancer Treatment Options

At Metro Dermatology, treatment is customized to each patient’s skin type, diagnosis, and overall health. Our clinicians focus on precision, safety, and comfort, offering the latest technologies for effective, evidence-based care.

Treatment options may include:

  • Topical medications for early or superficial lesions

  • Cryotherapy (freezing) for precancerous or small lesions

  • Curettage and electrosurgery to remove and cauterize affected tissue

  • Photodynamic therapy (PDT), which uses light-activated medication to selectively destroy abnormal cells with minimal downtime

  • Surgical excision for deeper or more advanced cancers

Each approach is chosen to completely remove cancerous tissue while preserving as much healthy skin as possible.

Skin Cancer Prevention and Long-Term Skin Health

Maintaining lifelong skin health starts with prevention. To reduce risk, we recommend:

  • Applying broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) daily

  • Wearing hats, sunglasses, and sun-protective clothing

  • Seeking shade between 10 AM – 4 PM

  • Avoiding tanning beds and intentional sunburns

  • Scheduling annual full-body skin exams with a qualified clinician

Regular follow-ups enable early detection of any recurrence or new lesions, helping preserve clear, healthy skin.
